Inspired by the Samhain bonfires which historically were built on hill sides using local wood to ward off evil spirits and welcome the dead. They were also lit in a symbolic way to mimic the Sun and keep the Winter darkness at bay. Fire from these bonfires was used to light the fires in homes and the ashes spread on agricultural land to bring good luck throughout the year. The souls of our dead were said to be close at this time too. Samhain was the time when there was a doorway between our world and the next.
