The limited edition art piece by artist this iron-on patch stating MAKE CAKE NOT PROFIT, accompanies the project and performance of artist TAKE THE CAKE: SODA BREAD. The patch is presented in a riso-printed sleeve, created by the artist. Each patch is signed and numbered.

Following the period of the Easter Rising, Ireland saw a wave of workers asserting their rights and protesting. One of these events saw a number of Irish creameries in Limerick being taken over by the workers who, as part of this protest, hoisted red flags over the main creamery in Knocklong with the statement “We make butter, not profits”. This was one of the Limerick Soviets that were initiated at the time. The patch stating MAKE CAKE NOT PROFIT on a red background was created as a reference to this important period of Irish history.

An ongoing project of artist April Gertler, TAKE THE CAKE is a hybrid lecture performance / baking show with the intention of examining the historical trajectory of common ingredients of a cake using a feminist and post-colonial perspective.

The cake is the vehicle used to explore the complexity of our cultural, historical and social landscapes. TAKE THE CAKE: SODA BREAD was commissioned by by curator . Terms of Consumption reviews and revises Irish cultural identity through contemporary visual arts practices that in turn engage in conversations around food histories and culture.
